Tip Sheet #13
This is the last weekly tip sheet.
Beginning in June 2002, the weekly tip sheet will become the Monthly Tip Sheet.
USING THE CHARACTER MAP
Many word processing programs have their own procedures for accessing special characters such various letters with accents or punctuation used in non-English surnames and words.
Some examples are: ö ü ° Ø ñ and .
There are plenty more.
In Windows 98 you can retrieve characters for use in any program by using the Character Map utility. This little program allows you to copy characters to the clipboard for insertion into any document.
Access the Character Map by going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.

You can browse the various fonts using the drop-down menu at the top of the dialog box.

When you find a character you want to copy, select it with the mouse, then click the Select button and the Copy button to copy it to the clipboard. (You can even select a sequence of characters, if you like, before you click Copy.) Then click Close or Minimize, return to the program you were working in previously, and press Ctrl-V to paste the character (or sequence of characters) into your work.

CANCEL PRINT JOB
Just send a bunch of documents to the printer, and now you've changed your mind? Rather than waste all that paper, use the printer queue to cancel what you can.
Select Start > Settings > Printers, and double-click your printer's icon to display its queue, or list of pending jobs. Right-click the job you'd like to cancel and select Cancel Printing. Immediately, that document disappears from the list.

(Tip-in-a-tip: If a long document is already in the process of printing, canceling that job will stop it midway.)
MAINTAINING YOUR PRINTER
Cleaned your printer lately?
Perhaps you didn't know that you can perform a quick cleaning job on your printer without getting your hands dirty.
To access your printer's built-in cleaning utility, selcet Start > Settings > Control Panel > Printers. Right-click on your default printer and select Properties. Depending on the brand of printer you are using, you will be able to choose from
various cleaning and maintenance functions. The best part is that you only need to click a button. The printer does the rest.
